Paul,
Good Morning to you. I apologize for the lack of communication over the weekend, but I had to step back and take a breather from the frantic pace of last week's outfitting.
Pedro and I finished our purchases on Saturday. We found a lovely specimen of a Sherpamute in a nearby village. Black and gray, he is a sight to behold. Both beautiful and strong, he is a regal animal in this dusty country. He will be a handful, but he appears loyal and ready to work. I have named him, "Lady" out of respect for the kind Bengal woman who sold him to us.
Having everything that we needed for our journey, Pedro, Lady and I took a small holiday to cleanse our minds and bodies. We had intended on spending some time by the sea, but in the end, we made camp just outside of town at a local getaway recommended by the bellman at the Hotel de Pollo.
The people were fantastically friendly and we wanted for nothing all weekend. I lay on my side, sipping the local grog by an open fire as Pedro proudly told stories of our travels and adventures. He is a very animated story teller, and, though we speak very little of one another's language, I can tell that he favors this cavalier lifestyle that he has fallen into with me. I am both proud and reluctant when I think of the dangers that I will have to expose this boy to during our travels to the front.
Lady was an immediate hit with the locals. His feats of strength, fierce loyalty and canine beauty were an elixir to the simple villagers here and it was great entertainment. There was a tense moment or two when we learned that Lady is not good around small children and is a biter, but I was able to make light of it all with the distribution of colored beads and small trinkets.
We broke bread with these people. We drank their drinks. We stayed in their modest homes made of mud and thistle. It was a wonderful time. We are not as rested as much as had been hoped for due to the fact that I picked up a touch of the local water bug. It was to be expected and I have no regrets. Never the less, I spent much of Sunday as if a cat was running about in my intestines. Pedro came out of the weekend none the worse for wear and Lady was spoiled by all but the youngest of this nomadic clan. This morning brought fresh feelings of hope and I was able to eat a dry piece of toast without any consequence.
Well, off again. Tonight we begin the adventure. We plan on taking unpaved roads out of town so as to attract no attention. I was able to, "liberate" a fine Kodak disc camera from an outdoor bazaar and one truly feels that things will work out for the best.
I look forward to tomorrow night's writing, as everything will become so much clearer.
Take care, Paul.
