My Favorite Two Line Phone Pranks

Back in the day (1998) caller ID was a rarity. This made the phone network a field ripe for prank calls and tomfoolery.

My roommates and I had two phone lines (one was usually dedicated to Internet) and a two line phone. The phone would allow us to combine both lines into a conference call. We asked ourselves—why haven’t we used this for the power of prank?

  1. Call someone on line #1 (using the 2-line phone)
  2. Call someone else on line #2 (using the cordless)
  3. Press the “Join” button on the 2-line phone, joining both callers to each other.
  4. Press “Speaker” so we can all hear the conversation.
  5. Press “Record” on the tape recorder.

Each party thought that the other had called them. It was great fun!

Unfortunately, some of our best work wasn’t recorded. Some favorites included having McDonald’s “call” Burger King, and a great interchange between Maranantha Bookstore and the Maranantha Outlet Store.

But we do have some good ones for you to listen to below:

This is the second call between Michelle and Jeff. Both think the other is flirting with them.

This one clearly has a communication barrier.

Chelsea and Kristen try to figure out what is going on...

Bret and Kristen actually joke that someone is listening. Little do they know that they are right!!!

Bill and David have little time for each other.

Whoops, we leave the speaker phone on and Bill hears us!!!

The Jig is up. Brook tries to play dumb, but they seem to know we are up to something.

If your kid makes one of those little homemade guitars out of a cigar box and rubber bands, don't let him just play it once or twice and then throw it away. Make him practice on it, every day, for about three hours a day. Later, he'll thank you.
